Kenyan motorists are set to enjoy a slight reprieve from the rising fuel costs, with the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announcing a reduction in the retail price of super petrol and diesel. The changes, which took effect on Thursday, August 15, 2019, come as a result of the reduced cost of petroleum products imported to the country over July.
According to EPRA, the average landed cost of imported super petrol decreased by 5.64 per cent in July compared to June, while diesel decreased by 7.11 per cent. However, kerosene prices increased by 1.88 per cent during the same period.
Super petrol will now retail at Sh112.53 per litre in Nairobi, down from Sh115.39 per litre, while diesel will decline to Sh100.60 per litre, down from Sh103.88 per litre. Kerosene, however, will now retail at Sh103.95 per litre, up from Sh102.97 per litre.
It is worth noting that this is the first time petrol prices have decreased since February 2019, when they started to rise following increases in the cost of crude oil at the international markets and a slight weakening of the local currency against the dollar.
EPRA is currently reviewing the price capping formula, with the new mechanism expected to be in place by September 2019.
