On August 14, 2019, Kenya's Ministry of Sports, Culture and Heritage Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed addressed concerns over the welfare of athletes preparing for the African Games.
Earlier that week, athletes and the women's volleyball team were ejected from their hotel rooms at Lukes Hotel due to unsettled bills, sparking a standoff that was eventually resolved by the government.
Amina distanced the ministry from the incident, instead placing blame on the respective federations (Athletics Kenya and Kenya Volleyball Federation) for booking athletes in a non-designated hotel.
According to Amina, the Games Steering Committee had previously resolved that teams would be accommodated in approved Government-owned facilities, including Stadion Hotel, Kasarani, Utalii College, Kenya School of Monetary Studies, and Kenyatta University Athletes Village.
Kenya is set to send a large contingent of 290 athletes in 22 disciplines to the Games, which are scheduled to take place in Morocco from August 19-31.
Amina assured the athletes that the government has sufficient budgetary allocations to cater for the Games, citing a budget of Sh335,773,111 approved by the Sports Fund Oversight Board.
The teams will depart for Morocco in four batches, with the first batch already in Rabat and the remaining groups set to leave on Thursday, Saturday, and August 23.
