Shocking Incident in Kakamega County

On August 7, 2019, Martin Shikuku Alukoye, a 31-year-old employee of Kakamega County's Youth Services Department, died after falling into a river following a fight.

According to The Standard, Alukoye was buried on August 11, following traditional Abaluhya customs and rituals.

However, on August 12, county officials arrived at the deceased's home, claiming the work uniform as their own.

After discovering that the deceased's body was buried with the uniform, the officials demanded that the body be exhumed and the uniform be recovered.

They eventually left the uniform on top of the grave, inside the deceased's home.

Francis Mutamba, the deceased's uncle, condemned the officials' actions, stating, "They broke the law and our customs and traditions for the sake of taking the deceased's work uniform."

He added, "The county government was fully involved in the burial process and did not raise any issues when the deceased was buried with his work uniform."

Naibu Chifu of Ituti Daniel Namayi also criticized the officials' actions, saying, "The body should have been exhumed with a letter to retrieve it. They went against the law in implementing what they did."

According to tradition, those involved in exhuming the body must perform a ritual by slaughtering a cow or goat to appease the spirits.

The body was reburied on August 12, after the elderly performed the ritual.
