On August 13, 2019, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi issued a Gazette notice to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declaring the Kibra Parliamentary seat vacant.

The seat became vacant after the death of Kibra MP Ken Okoth on July 26, 2019, at The Nairobi Hospital, where he had been battling colon cancer.

According to the Elections Act, 2011, the IEBC is required to prepare for a by-election within three months of receiving the notice from the Speaker.

With the seat now vacant, the IEBC will set a date for the Kibra by-election, which will fill the vacant position in the National Assembly.
