On August 14, 2019, Borussia Moenchengladbach announced the signing of Algerian defender Ramy Bensebaini from Rennes, marking a significant move in the Bundesliga.
Bensebaini, 24, had a successful stint with Rennes, helping the team upset Paris Saint-Germain at the Stade de France in April. He also played a crucial role in Algeria's Africa Cup of Nations victory in Egypt, where they defeated Senegal in the final.
With a career spanning multiple clubs, including Paradou in Algiers, Lierse in Belgium, and Montpellier, Bensebaini has gained valuable experience. He even had a trial with Arsenal, playing one reserve game, before joining Rennes in 2016.
The transfer fee was reportedly estimated at Sh1.1 billion (10 million euros). Moenchengladbach's sporting director, Max Eberle, expressed his excitement about the signing, stating, "Ramy is the player we've been looking for our squad. He can be used as a left back or central defender and brings a lot of experience from three successful years with a very good club from the French Ligue 1."
Moenchengladbach, who last won the Bundesliga title in 1977, finished fifth in the previous season.
