Published on August 14, 2019, by Andrew Tuimur, a senior government official, this article highlights the pressing need for environmental stewardship in the face of rising cancer cases.

Cancer is a complex disease caused by genetic mutations, some of which occur naturally, while others are triggered by environmental factors, such as exposure to carcinogenic agents.

Research has established a strong link between lifestyle choices, like smoking and sedentary behavior, and cancer. Moreover, a healthy environment is essential for human well-being, as it provides us with clean air, water, and food.

Unfortunately, human activities are often detrimental to the environment, leading to pollution and degradation. For instance, raw sewage and toxic waste are dumped into rivers, affecting downstream communities and contaminating the food chain.

Proper waste management and regulation of environmental pollutants, such as diesel engine exhaust, are crucial to mitigate the negative impact on air quality and public health.

As Dr. Tuimur, the CAS in the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, emphasizes, it is our collective responsibility to care for the environment and promote a healthy lifestyle to prevent cancer.
