On August 14, 2019, a Safaricom staff member was brought to justice for allegedly stealing from a deceased customer's Mpesa account.
Peter Odhiambo Ochieng, a Safaricom employee, was accused of accessing a deceased woman's Mpesa wallet and withdrawing over Sh40,000.
According to the charge sheet, on July 26, 2019, Ochieng accessed a Safaricom SIM card belonging to late Janet Khaniri, wife of Wilson Karani Khaniri, and stole Sh45,600 from her Mpesa wallet.
Ochieng pleaded not guilty to the charges and requested lenient bail terms, citing his young family's dependence on him for financial support.
He also claimed to be facing a similar charge in another court, where his employer is the complainant.
The court granted Ochieng a cash bail of Sh100,000 or an alternative of Sh200,000 bond.
