On August 14, 2019, South Sudan President Salva Kiir met with the head of Darfur rebel faction Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) Dr. Gibril Ibrahim Mohammed in a bid to restore peace and stability in Sudan.
The meeting was a follow-up of President Kiir's commitment to reconcile armed groups with the ruling military junta in Sudan.
According to a statement from the South Sudanese presidency, President Kiir's efforts are aimed at ensuring that all rebel movements in Sudan end the ongoing political turmoil and accept peace as they work collectively with the leadership of the Transitional Military Council and the Freedom and Change movement.
President Kiir's meeting with Dr. Mohammed comes days after he met with other opposition leaders to solve the political crisis in Khartoum since the ousting of former President Omar al-Bashir in April.
As the statement noted, 'peace and stability in the neighboring Sudan means the same for South Sudan.'
