On August 11, 2019, Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) officers arrested three men, Abdi Mohammed Guled, Ibrahim Mohammed Guled, and Mohammed Bashi Aden, at Villa Rosa Kempinski Hotel in Nairobi County.
The men are being investigated for conspiracy to commit a terrorist act and allegedly being members of a terrorist group.
According to court papers, the suspects were in possession of several items, including Kenyan ID cards, mobile phones, and electronic gadgets, which police have forwarded to ATPU laboratories for forensic analysis.
Investigating officer Sergeant Joseph Mwiti filed an affidavit in court, stating that the suspects were taking photographs at the hotel without explanation and that they require details of all the persons the suspects have been communicating with, both in Kenya and outside.
Intelligence reports suggest that the three suspects have other associates who are still at large, and the court was told that there is a need to carry out detailed interviews with the respondents and their associates once arrested.
On August 14, 2019, the court granted the investigating officer's request to detain the suspects for five days, citing the severity of the allegations and the potential for flight.
