On August 14, 2019, a Nairobi court heard a shocking case of attempted murder for insurance gain.
Emma Wangari Wangui, a middle-aged woman, and her accomplice Peter Mwaniki Wanjiku were accused of planning to kill Wangui's secret lover, Evans Karanja Mwangi, to claim millions of shillings in personal accident insurance cover.
The suspects allegedly forged a national identity card bearing Mwangi's name and submitted it to three insurance companies: ICEA Lion Insurance on June 13, 2018, APA insurance on June 14, 2018, and Britam Insurance on June 18, 2018.
According to Mwangi, he had never paid premiums to any of the mentioned insurance companies and had survived three attempts on his life.
Ms. Wangari was remanded in police custody until August 27, while Mr. Mwaniki was released on a cash bail of sh 200,000.
The two are also being investigated for alleged land grabbing cases in Ruiru and Thika.
