Former England footballer Wayne Rooney has reportedly made a significant change in his life, quitting alcohol in a bid to save his marriage to Coleen.

According to reports, Rooney's boozy antics in the United States had infuriated his wife, who has been open about her desire to bring an end to their American journey.

Rooney, who captains DC United in the MLS, has been having sessions with a counsellor ahead of his return to the UK in October, in a bid to cut alcohol out completely.

His wife Coleen has already returned to England, with their four kids, and Rooney is set to take up a player-coach role at Derby County from January onwards.

Rooney's decision to seek help to cut out the booze is reportedly all part of his attempts to appease Coleen and keep their marriage on track.

As reported by The Sun, a source close to the couple stated, “Wayne was drinking a fair amount in the States and it was causing huge problems with Coleen.”

The source also claimed that Rooney was “boozing at home late into the night” and that it was like he was “on self-destruct”.

Rooney's past behaviour has been well-documented, including his arrest for being drunk and disorderly at Washington airport and a well-documented '12-hour boozy bender' with a barmaid in Florida.
