As the government's ban on 27 betting companies takes effect, hundreds of employees are staring at job loss. The decision, made a month ago, has left many in limbo.
According to sources, SportPesa and Betin, two of the affected firms, have informed hundreds of staff not to report to work, effectively leaving them jobless.
Another betting company has seen its foreign bosses take off without explanation or notice, leaving employees in limbo and without payment for their dues.
The ban has also thrown the operations of several sporting entities into crisis, with the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) being particularly affected.
As the KPL's title sponsor, SportPesa's withdrawal has left the league body with no income, causing operations to grind to a halt. Employees are demanding two months' salary arrears, and the league's Chief Executive, Jack Oguda, has stated that they will not be able to start the league without an alternative source of income.
Similarly affected are Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, who are struggling to pay their players' salaries due to the loss of SportPesa sponsorship money.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is now actively seeking an alternative sponsor for the domestic cup.
