Ken Okoth, the 41-year-old Kibra MP who succumbed to colorectal cancer on July 26th, 2019, will have his family receive Sh32 million from Parliament.
The amount includes his group life insurance cover and death gratuity, as per the Parliamentary Pensions Act.
However, a parliament pension officer stated that they must first obtain a letter from the courts indicating the administrator of Okoth's estate before disbursing the cash.
Once family members agree on how to share the money, the name of the administrator must be published in the Kenya Gazette to allow anyone with an issue to file a complaint.
Each MP contributes 12.75 percent of their salary as pension, which is matched by the State. Their pensionable emoluments include salary, responsibility allowance, constituency allowance, nominated member's allowance, ex officio member's allowance, house allowance, accommodation allowance, and sitting allowance.
Okoth's brother Imran told Daily Nation that details of how they will share the late MP's estate are a private matter.
