Published on August 14, 2019, a study by the National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has shed light on the alarming rate of drug abuse among Kenya's high school students.
According to the research, a staggering 8 out of 10 students have been found to abuse drugs, with alcohol, prescription drugs, khat, tobacco, and bhang being the most commonly abused substances.
The study further reveals that schools are the primary setting where young students are initiated into drug abuse, with nearly half of all students (49.5%) abusing drugs during school holidays.
Interior CS Fred Matiang'i, speaking at the launch of the African Journal of Alcohol report by NACADA, confirmed that drug abuse poses a significant threat to the youth today.
Meanwhile, 14 students were arrested in Mombasa and charged with being in possession of narcotic drugs. Although they pleaded not guilty, the case serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of drug abuse among Kenya's youth.
