Lucy Wambui Murigi, the reigning world champion, is undeterred by her early exit from the fifth round of the World Mountain Running Association World Cup in Sierre-Zinal, Switzerland, on August 4, 2019.
Although she failed to complete the 15km course, Murigi is confident of retaining her title, with two more rounds to go in the competition.
“Sierre –Zinal is the biggest mountain in Switzerland, and I started very well but after a 12km climb I injured my leg and forced it a little bit, after a while, I could not sustain so I decided to pull out,” Murigi told Citizen Digital.
Despite the setback, Murigi has already demonstrated her prowess in mountain running, having won the 16.4km Thyone Dixene race in Switzerland (1:22:35) and the 16.5km Maxi short race – Annecy race in France (1:30:27).
The 34-year-old champion is now focused on retaining the World trophy, with the next two rounds scheduled for the Drei Zinnen in Sexten, Italy, on September 14, and the Smarna Gora in Slovenia, on October 12.
