On August 14, 2019, a Safaricom employee, Peter Odhiambo Ochieng, was arraigned in the Milimani Law Court in Nairobi to face charges of stealing from a dead subscriber's M-Pesa account.
Ochieng was accused of illegally accessing a Safaricom SIM card belonging to a deceased woman and withdrawing more than Sh45,600.
According to the court, on July 26, 2019, Ochieng conspired with others to steal Sh45,600 from the deceased Janet Khaniri's M-Pesa account, taking advantage of his position as a Safaricom employee.
Ochieng denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku.
He pleaded for lenient bail terms, citing his young family's dependence on him for financial support and a similar charge he was facing in another court where Safaricom was the complainant.
He was granted a cash bail of Sh100,000 or an alternative of Sh200,000 bond.
