On August 13th, 2019, the Defenders Coalition, the National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders, Kenya, launched the 'Climb for Justice' campaign to raise Kshs 50 million for a home to protect human rights defenders in Kenya.
The home will serve as a vibrant space for promoting and protecting the rights of all Kenyan people as enshrined in the constitution.
According to Kamau Ngugi, Executive Director of the National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders – Kenya, the campaign aims to provide long-term support to activists who stand up for justice and human rights.
‘Over the years, we have acted boldly to ensure that activists who stand up for what is just and right suffer no harm. We get them lawyers, bail them out of custody, and mobilize public support, which comes with immense financial implications. Hence, the need for a long-term sustainable plan,’ said Ngugi.
The campaign will run until December 12th, 2019, and will culminate in a summit to peak Lenana, Mt. Kenya, where a group of volunteer climbers and supporters will hoist the Kenyan flag.
The climbers include 7-year-old Jabali Mboya, 8-year-old Naila Sifa, and 11-year-old Malcom Wahome, who have joined the campaign to support a more secure and happy Kenya.
