On August 14, 2019, the Daily Nation published a notice from Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) listing 233 individuals who have allegedly encroached on its park in Voi, Taita Taveta County.
According to KWS's lawyer, Joseph Shiundu Lutta, the agency is seeking the eviction of these residents from the Tsavo East National Park.
Mr. Lutta explained that the initial draft of the class action suit, filed on March 8, 2019, contained only 10 respondents but was rejected for not meeting the required threshold.
As a result, KWS worked on an expanded list, which now includes 233 individuals, and has held a meeting with the residents, chaired by the area chief.
Mr. Lutta noted that land is an emotive issue and that the inter parties hearing has been set for November 28 to give the respondents ample time to file their responses.
