Published on August 14, 2019, four professionals share their expertise on how to prevent premature hair loss.
According to Kinyua Tarah, a hairdresser at Methods Hair Salon, it's essential to consult a professional when relaxing your hair. They are trained to apply the correct techniques, minimizing the risk of scalp and hair damage.
When blow-drying, Tarah advises against using high heat, instead opting for moderate heat to prevent burning or breakage. Additionally, avoid hairstyles that pull tightly on the hair, and condition your hair regularly to maintain its elasticity.
Christine Gitau, a trichologist at HairHub: The Trichologist Centre, warns against over-processing hair by coloring only the sections that have already grown from the root. She also recommends limiting the time spent with braids, weaves, and cornrows to three weeks, followed by a two to three-week break before reapplying them.
Dr. Saroop Singh Bansil, a dermatologist at Laser & Aesthetic Centre Upper Hill Medical Centre, cautions against braiding young children's hair if you don't plan to take care of the plaited hair. He also advises against frequent combing and encourages seeking medical advice if experiencing hair loss.
Dorcas Gichuhi, a dietician/nutritionist at The Nairobi Hospital, emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet in boosting the body's immunity and protecting against disease. She also notes that vegetarians should consume soya beans, cereals, seeds, and quinoa regularly, as they lack essential amino acids necessary for hair growth.
