On Tuesday evening, athletes at the African Games residential camp were left stranded after they were thrown out of their hotel rooms at The Luke Hotel along Thika Road due to unpaid bills.
The team, comprising athletes and the women's volleyball players, had been residing at the hotel as they prepared for the 12th edition of the African Games, scheduled to take place in Morocco from August 19 to 31.
According to one of the athletes, who spoke to Citizen Digital, they were thrown out of the hotel with their belongings, with the management citing unpaid bills.
However, a late intervention by the government, led by Principal Secretary Kirimi Kaberia, saved the athletes from spending the night in the cold.
Before the incident, athletes had raised concerns about the limited space at the hotel, with some even struggling to secure rooms.
The athletes have been commuting to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, for training, while the Malkia Strikers have been training at the Barclays Plaza after shifting from Kasarani to create room for the ongoing East Africa Military Games.
The athletes are yet to receive their allowances, which they were supposed to receive after joining the residential camp on August 5.
After the trials, Athletics Kenya handed over the team to the Kenya National Sports Council, which is mandated to oversee preparations for the Kenyan contingent in the continental championships.
The last batch of Kenya's contingent is expected to leave on August 23.
