Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has been enjoying various benefits since the March 9, 2018, handshake between him and President Uhuru Kenyatta.
According to a report, the State has sent officers to evaluate Raila's offices at Upper Hill, Nairobi, with the intention of taking over the payment of his rent.
Additionally, Raila now earns a salary and allowances, as stipulated in the Retirement Benefits (Deputy President and Designated State Officers) Act of 2015.
Under the Act, a retired prime minister is entitled to a monthly pension equal to 80% of their last monthly salary while in office, as well as a lump sum payment on retirement.
Other benefits include two saloon cars, a four-wheel drive vehicle, and a range of support staff, including drivers, personal assistants, secretaries, and security guards.
Lawyer Paul Mwangi, co-chair of the Building Bridges Initiative, has argued that Raila was only receiving the benefits he was entitled to under the law.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is said to have personally instructed senior security chiefs to ensure Raila's welfare was addressed.
