Published on August 14, 2019, differences of opinion between Jubilee Party leaders over the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) have intensified, threatening to tear the ruling party further apart.
While the party's secretary-general Raphael Tuju said Jubilee is fully behind the initiative, the party's leadership in the National Assembly, fronted by Chief Whip Benjamin Washiali, criticised the initiative as dead on arrival.
Mr Tuju defended the BBI team, stating that the initiative is an important government project that benefits from State funding. He added that the team will write a report with recommendations between September and October, and that people cannot blame the BBI team for collecting public views and writing a report.
However, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, a key ally of the DP, dismissed the team, terming it an 'amorphous body with no legal backing.' He claimed that the team was serving the interests of Mr Kenyatta and Mr Odinga and that their report does not represent the views of Kenyans.
Other leaders, including Kuria West MP Mathias Robi and Soy MP Caleb Kositany, also expressed their opposition to the BBI, stating that it does not favour the 'common mwananchi' and that its aim is to create new governance structures for a clique of people.
