On August 14, 2019, the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) pushed back against reports of poor working conditions within the national women team.
According to KBF chairman Paul Otula, the team's coach Ronnie Owino failed to instill 'common sense' in the players, who are currently competing at the Afro Basket championship in Senegal.
The players, led by captain Hilda Indasi, have expressed concerns over delayed payment of allowances and inadequate preparation for the tournament.
"The coach should have pre-empted and instilled common sense in the players," Otula said in a statement.
He claimed that the team had received advance allowances of $100 each, just like the men, and that return air tickets for the 14-player contingent had been paid.
However, the players dispute this, saying they have only been paid Sh10,000 so far and are being forced to play with only 10 players and one coach.
The team, dubbed the Lionesses, have lost their opening two matches at the tournament and are scheduled to play Angola on Wednesday.
