On August 12, 2019, Mombasa Police Commander Johnstone Ipara led a raid on the Mombasa residence of suspected drug trafficker and tycoon Ali Punjani.
The raid, which aimed to arrest Punjani and confiscate any drugs found, was reportedly successful in recovering three rolls of bhang.
However, Punjani was not found at the residence, with police ordering him to surrender himself. It later emerged that he had been in India for heart treatment.
Three foreigners, including Punjani's Nepalese third wife Karki Suhmija, were arrested and taken to Nyali Police Station.
According to Ipara, the police believed that Punjani's house had been used to sell drugs.
