Published on August 14, 2019, SWVL, a bus-hailing service, is set to revolutionize the way commuters travel in Nairobi by introducing dynamic pricing in the future.

The dynamic pricing system will charge different fares for various drop-off points based on distance and time, a feature similar to other ride-hailing services. This move is expected to benefit Kenyan commuters who value convenience and comfort for short distances.

Currently, SWVL charges Kshs. 200 for any destination along its 55 routes in Nairobi, which is approximately 30-40% of what an average cab-hailing service charges.

According to Shivachi Muleji, SWVL Kenya's General Manager, the company aims to provide a premium commute experience at an affordable price. SWVL plans to disrupt Nairobi's Matatu culture by offering safety, reliability, and a premium experience.

Some of the features that set SWVL apart from other public transport services include the ability for riders to track how far their bus is and plan their pick-up point accordingly. Additionally, customers receive refunds in case a bus misses their route after booking.

SWVL has also partnered with Flare to provide emergency rescue services to commuters. Furthermore, the company offers insurance for its riders, providing an added layer of security.

SWVL was founded in 2017 with the goal of providing reliable commute services in emerging markets. The company launched in Nairobi in January 2019 with four routes and has since expanded its services to cover 55 routes within the city.

With its plans to expand routes connecting Nairobi to other destinations based on demand, SWVL is poised to make a significant impact on the Kenyan transport sector. By reducing traffic jams and offering convenience and comfort, companies like SWVL may encourage people to adopt public transport over buying cars.
