On August 8, 2019, Me Aboubacar Diomande, a 31-year-old former Charlton Athletic player, arrived in India to play football, having been granted a visa in July.
Tragedy struck just days later when Diomande's body was discovered in a mutilated state near Baradwar railway station in the district of Chhattisgarh.
According to local police, Diomande's identity was confirmed after his phone was found near the body, which contained identification documents.
Udyan Behar, a local police officer, reported that it was unclear which train Diomande was traveling on at the time of the incident.
Diomande, who had played for Stella Club d'Adjame for over 12 years, had only recently arrived in India to meet his new teammates in Kolkata.
Despite police contacting his friends and family, nobody has come to claim the body, which remains at the scene.
Police also attempted to look for missing bags on the train at Howrah Station but were unsuccessful in finding any.
