Published on August 14, 2019, the East Africa Secondary School games are set to kick off in Arusha, Tanzania, on Friday, with Kenya's netball champions, Kaya Tiwi, facing a daunting task.
Since the inception of the games in 2002, Uganda has dominated the competition, winning 16 titles, and Kaya Tiwi coach Maryanne Obonyo acknowledges that beating the Ugandans will not be easy.
'We don't want to raise our expectations and put so much pressure on the girls because beating Uganda in their best sport is not going to be easy. We want to improve and playing in the semis will be a huge achievement for the girls,' Obonyo said.
Obonyo attributes Kenya's struggles to experience, as Ugandans begin playing netball at a young age and have more years in secondary school, giving them an edge in the sport.
Kaya Tiwi will be competing in Group A alongside defending champions St Noa and Buddo School from Uganda, Kilindi from Tanzania, and Katoto Secondary School from Malawi.
Malawi is also a netball powerhouse in the continent, and their girls are expected to make their presence felt in Arusha.
