On August 14, 2019, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) made a significant seizure at the Port of Mombasa, confiscating three high-end vehicles worth Ksh.40 million.
The vehicles, two Range Rovers and a Mercedes Benz, were concealed in a container declared to be carrying household goods. However, during verification at the Container Freight Station (CFS), the true contents of the container were revealed.
According to KRA, the scanner image from the Customs X-ray scanner in Mombasa showed that the contents of the container were three high-end motor vehicles, inconsistent with the declaration.
The manifest indicated that the cargo was from the United Kingdom destined for Kampala, Uganda. However, preliminary findings suggested that the three motor vehicle units could have been stolen from the United Kingdom.
As part of its efforts to combat the importation of contraband goods, KRA is working in partnership with local and international investigation and enforcement agents, including the National Intelligence Service (NIS), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the Kenyan and International Police (Interpol), to get to the root of the syndicate.
