On Wednesday, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko appeared before the Senate's Devolution Committee to explain his delay in appointing a deputy governor, more than 15 months after Polycarp Igathe resigned.
During the hearing, Sonko locked horns with Senator Johnson Sakaja, despite both claiming to be friends. Sonko expressed shock that Sakaja was bringing up the issue of the deputy governor position, which he described as a 'non-issue.'
According to Sonko, Sakaja would have summoned him to discuss the matter instead of petitioning the Senate. Sonko also claimed that Sakaja is 'fighting' him because he wants to succeed him in 2022.
However, Sakaja denied the allegations, stating that he is only playing his oversight role as a senator and has never announced or declared interest in the governor's seat.
Sonko also claimed that he has shown goodwill by nominating Miguna Miguna as his deputy, but the nomination was rejected by the MCAs. He further stated that he was prepared to name a deputy last December but failed after receiving two letters from NASA chiefs, Raila Odinga, urging him to appoint their preferred persons in the spirit of the handshake.
