Published on August 13, 2019, Judith Nkatha overcame a shoulder injury to defeat Faith Nyabera 7-5, 6-4 in the first round of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Women's World Tour at Peponi School in Kiambu County.
Nkatha's strong serves dominated the match from the early stages, with a prize fund of Sh1.5 million up for grabs in the tournament.
'I thought my injury would present a challenge to me in the match, but it didn't bother me much. I am familiar with the court and I felt less pressure playing here because I was playing a fellow Kenyan,' Nkatha said.
Meanwhile, Nyabera was disappointed with her performance, citing that she expected to play much better.
'I'm disappointed today. I expected to play much better, especially because I had corrected most of the mistakes that I made last week,' Nyabera said.
Kenya's Angela Okutoyi and her twin Roselida Asumwa also won in the doubles category, beating Mariana Borges from Brazil and Adi Gavish of Israel 7-6, (2), 6-4.
Other doubles matches saw Alicia Owegi and Shania Kaur Gadhi team up to beat Mary Wachira and Cynthia Wanjala 6-0, 6-1.
