On August 10, 2019, a dramatic scene unfolded at the Nairobi Hebrew Synagogue on Uhuru Highway, where a police officer was allegedly assaulted by a suspect.

According to court records, Daniel Malaki Otieno was accused of unlawfully assaulting Police Constable (PC) Harisson Karisa Kazungu. The incident occurred when PC Kazungu was in plain clothes, leading the suspect to believe he was being robbed.

Mr. Otieno claimed that he only later discovered the officer's true identity when he was arrested and taken to the police station.

He faced a second count of malicious damage of property, accused of damaging a certificate of appointment belonging to PC Dennis Okumu.

On August 13, 2019, Milimani Law Courts Magistrate Martha Mutuku released Mr. Otieno on a cash bail of Ksh.100,000 or an alternative bond of Ksh.200,000.

The case is set for pre-trial directions on August 27, 2019.
