August 13, 2019 - A group of 948 Telkom Kenya retirees are seeking justice for their Sh7.2 billion pension dues in the Labour Court. The retirees are fighting against the board of trustees of the Teleposta Pension Scheme, who are contesting a 2017 ruling that directed them to pay the pensioners their benefits and dues.
The retirees, represented by lawyer Eddy Amadi, argue that the board of trustees is trying to circumvent the law by appealing the tribunal's decision. They claim that the board's actions are a travesty of justice and will result in great loss and damage to the pensioners.
According to the retirees, the board of trustees is contesting the February 13, 2017 ruling, which directed them to compute and pay the pensioners all their benefits and dues. The board argues that the tribunal did not take into account certain issues in their decision.
The case has significant implications for the over 2,600 Telkom Kenya employees who were retrenched and are eyeing terminal dues. The outcome of the case will benefit all the retrenched employees, not just the 948 who have filed the case.
The parties are set to resume court on November 1.
