Published on August 13, 2019, authorities in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city, have announced a plan to protect single women from being deceived by married men.
According to regional commissioner Paul Makonda, the administration will publish the identities of all married men on a website operated by a State agency to prevent unsuspecting single women from being preyed upon.
Makonda cited numerous complaints from young women who have been deceived by men promising to marry them, only to later ditch them. He stated that the plan aims to save women from 'unnecessary heartbreaks' and 'emotional bruises'.
Under Tanzania's laws, authorities can protect women who have been deceived by men with promises of marriage. Makonda plans to use this clause to bring sanity in relationships and reduce cases of men conning women in the name of love and marriages.
He emphasized that all married people will be required to register their marital statuses with the region's database agency, making it easier for single women to verify the marital status of men who have promised to marry them.
