On Tuesday, services at the Homa Bay County government offices were paralysed due to a workers' strike. The Kenya County Governments Workers Union officials, led by Chairman Kennedy Okumu and Secretary Meshack Onyango, announced that they would not resume duties until their July salaries were paid.
The Union officials claimed that the county government had failed to pay them their salaries, despite a strike notice that expired on Monday. Okumu stated, 'We gave the county a strike notice which expired on Monday but they have not replied. We have downed our tools from today.'
Onyango added that many county government employees were facing financial problems due to delayed salaries, saying, 'County government workers cannot meet their daily needs because of delayed salaries. Let them pay us.'
Similar complaints were raised by the chairman of the Kenya Union of Civil Servants, Tom Akech, who urged the county government to pay workers so that they return to work.
