On March 9, 2018, a historic handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga marked a new path for Kenya. However, the journey to this moment was not without its challenges.
According to Raila, Uhuru initially ordered his arrest, but later changed his mind and agreed to dialogue. In a recent revelation, Raila shared the details of the emotive discourse that led him to risk his life and get sworn in as the People's President.
'I told Uhuru to leave out people who wanted to talk about 2022 politics out of the important discussions,' Raila said. 'He in return told me he would not come with his deputy but gave a condition that I also don't go with Kalonzo. Our agreement was we would discuss the structure of our talks.'
Raila recounted the events leading up to his swearing-in as the People's President, including the planned burning of presidential portraits and the collection of taxes in their strongholds. He emphasized that the journey to Canaan he had promised his supporters was still viable, predicated on fulfilling the Kenyan dream as inscribed in the national anthem.
