On Monday, Kisumu's County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Finance, Nerry Achar, was dismissed from office following a successful impeachment motion proposed by the Kisumu County Assembly.
The motion was adopted by 37 out of the 40 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) who voted, with the Assembly also prompting the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to open a probe into the purchase of the governor's vehicle.
The probe was initiated after Achar was accused of defying procurement laws in the purchase of the vehicle, with the Assembly citing four grounds for the ouster, including incompetence, delays in reading the county's budget, lack of a relevant degree in finance, and dwindling revenue collection in the county.
According to Steve Owiti, the Kolwa East MCA and chairman of the special committee that oversaw the impeachment process, an invitation had been sent to Achar to appear before the committee over the weekend, but he failed to show up.
"For those two days, we were at the Assembly, waiting for the CEC but in vain," Owiti said.
Gard Olima, the Majority Chief Whip, added that Achar could have used the opportunity to respond to the allegations, but he chose not to.
