On August 13, 2019, the Kenyan government announced plans to merge all identification documents into one, with Huduma Namba being the preferred option.
According to Robert Mugo, Director of Shared Services at the ICT Ministry, this move is expected to reduce the number of documents and facilitate cashless service delivery from both government and non-government service providers.
As part of this initiative, the government successfully registered over 37.7 million Kenyans for the National Integrated Identity Management System, also known as Huduma Namba, within a span of 53 days.
However, confusion has arisen regarding the coexistence of the National Identification Card and Huduma Namba.
To address this issue, Mugo stated that the Huduma Namba will completely eliminate the need for some documents for those seeking government and other services.
The government has made significant strides in improving the ICT sector through automation and is working with local and international ICT investors to enhance skills and create employment opportunities.
