Wizkid, the Nigerian music sensation, has been making waves in the industry with his chart-topping hits and collaborations with international artists. However, despite his fame and fortune, he claims he's not yet successful.
According to an interview with Vanguard Nigeria published on August 13, 2019, Wizkid's definition of success is not about achieving a certain level of wealth or fame, but about making a positive impact on people's lives.
'Success is making sure that every African child out there has an opportunity to actually get ahead in life. Success, for me, is touching people's lives,' he said.
Wizkid's journey to stardom has been nothing short of remarkable. From earning a modest Ksh70,000 per gig to now raking in millions, he's come a long way. However, he's quick to point out that the music industry is plagued by piracy, which he believes is a major challenge.
'I don’t think I am successful yet, to be frank,' he said. 'If our works were not being pirated, I would make way much more.'
Wizkid's assessment of the African music industry is also noteworthy. He never thought it would go international as quickly as it has, but he's thrilled to see the recognition it's receiving.
'I never really thought we would make the hits we are making right now. Things have changed immensely in the last couple of years,' he said.
As proof of the industry's growth, Wizkid and fellow Nigerian artist Burna Boy have been featured on international stages, including Beyoncé's album, The Gift, and Jimmy Kimmel's show.
