Published on August 13, 2019, a recent article highlighted the importance of getting enough sleep for our overall health and well-being.
Unfortunately, many of us wear our sleep deprivation as a badge of honour, often ignoring the pangs that our bodies exude when in dire need of rest. We are always 'too busy' to take a nap or have a good siesta, and sleep is often the last thing on our minds.
However, sleep is crucial for both our physical and mental well-being. If you find yourself perpetually tired, constantly waking up in the middle of the night, having night sweats and stress dreams, then you have an unhealthy relationship with your slumber and you need to let it go!
To achieve the perfect sleep, follow these simple instructions:
- Get at least 7.5 – 9 hours of rest each night and establish a consistent sleep schedule by setting precise bed times and wake up times every night.
- Avoid bright lights before bed by lowering the lights an hour before bed and avoiding screens (TV, phone, computer) to give your brain time to wind down.
- Steer clear of caffeine and alcohol before bedtime, as they can affect the quality of your rest.
- Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet by investing in great bed sheets, an air conditioner, and good curtains.
- Finally, exercise regularly, and consider reading about the benefits of yoga for improving sleep.
