On August 11, 2019, Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang'i issued a stern warning to those involved in the narcotics trade, promising to take drastic measures to deal with the issue.
Fast forward to August 12, 2019, when Lamu County Police Commander Muchangi Kioi confirmed the arrest of Chief Inspector Shadrack Mumo, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) for Kizingitini Police Station, and three others in connection with the narcotics trade.
According to Kioi, the OCS was arrested after receiving a Sh50,000 bribe to release a suspected drug trafficker who was nabbed with 25 grams of bhang, a mobile phone, and a knife at Mtangawanda Jetty in Pate Island.
Separately, Bofu Ward Representative Ahmed Salama was arrested in Likoni following an operation targeting politicians and businessmen suspected to be behind the narcotics trade.
Mombasa Police Commander Johnston Ipara confirmed the arrest, stating that the politician was taken into custody following reports of his involvement in drug trafficking.
