On August 12, 2019, a deadly shootout occurred in Riverside, California, leaving a California Highway Patrol officer dead and two others injured.
According to Scott Parker, assistant chief of the Highway Patrol's inland division, one officer was in critical condition at a hospital late Monday night, while another received minor injuries.
Two civilians were also wounded in the confrontation, which began when a driver was pulled over for a traffic stop near Interstate 215 in Riverside.
As a Highway Patrol officer was filling out paperwork, the driver pulled out a rifle and shot the officer, prompting the officer to call for backup.
Several other police officers arrived at the scene, and the gunman shot two more Highway Patrol officers before being fatally shot by a fourth officer.
‘It was a long and horrific gun battle,’ said Chief Sergio G. Diaz of the Riverside Police Department.
Chief Diaz added that investigators would try to piece together the gunman's motive over the next few days.
Aerial news footage showed Highway Patrol cars and police vehicles at the scene, with traffic blocked off and helicopters buzzing overhead.
Local television news reports showed a white vehicle near the 215 Freeway overpass, where the shootout occurred.
