Kenya's First All-Women's Night Club Sparks Interest ¶
On August 13, 2019, a unique party concept was introduced in Nairobi's suburbs, where only women were allowed to attend. The event, called Strictly Silk, was organized by Njoki Ngumi, Njeri Gatungo, and Akati Khasiani, all members of The Nest Collective, a Kenyan multi-disciplinary arts collective.
Security was tight, with only men dropping off women allowed to linger for a moment. The all-female DJs and staff, including bar tenders, security officers, DJs, sound mixers, MCs, and ushers, created a safe and welcoming environment for women to enjoy themselves.
According to Ms. Ngumi, the event was conceived not only for fun but also to address unpleasant experiences women face when out with friends in mixed clubs. The founders aimed to curate an energy that celebrates women in spaces that are not usually welcome for them, especially in nightlife.
Kenya has been in the spotlight recently due to well-publicized cases of rape and alarming cases of femicide. The event's organizers hope to make the all-women dance parties not only regular in Kenya but also across Africa.
Ms. Ngumi emphasized that the nights are not gay clubs and straight women can come party without the presence of men. The event is deliberately queer-affirming and queer-celebrating, welcoming all people, including non-binary individuals.
With the success of Strictly Silk, the organizers aim to make this concept a regular occurrence in Kenya and beyond.
