On August 11, 2019, a dramatic turn of events unfolded in Lamu, Kenya, as police arrested one of their own for allegedly releasing a consignment of drugs and a notorious drug trafficker.
Chief Inspector Shadrack Mumo, the Officer in Charge (OCS) of the Kizingitini police station, was arrested on Monday morning, August 12, 2019, for his alleged role in the scandal.
According to Lamu Police Commander Muchagi Kioi, the police received intel that some drugs were being transported by boat from Lamu Island to Siyu area in Lamu East. Acting on the tip-off, police officers intercepted the boat and recovered the marijuana, valued at millions of shillings.
However, in a shocking twist, the suspect was later released after negotiations with the officers led by OCS Mumo. The police commander revealed that an investigation has been launched into the incident, with Mumo being arrested in connection with the alleged bribe.
Security officers who wished to remain anonymous told The Star that officers at the Kizingitini police station demanded Sh50,000 bribe to release the marijuana. The officers expressed frustration at the incident, stating that it had frustrated efforts to end the issue of drugs in the region.
