On August 7, 2018, Wairimu Muthoni boarded a Super Metro minibus on Moi Avenue to head to Westlands. However, the driver took her to Juja instead, and when she asked to be dropped off at Ngara, the conductor refused to give her change.
Wairimu insisted on her change, but the driver became impatient and slapped her hard, shoving her out of the minibus. She was left with a badly bleeding leg, a swollen face, and a broken phone.
Despite reporting the incident to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Wairimu faced numerous challenges in seeking justice. She was told to report to different police stations, file complaints, and attend meetings, only to be met with inaction and excuses.
Wairimu's case was eventually dismissed at Makadara Law Courts in early September 2019, as the defendant failed to produce the driver who had assaulted her. Undeterred, Wairimu plans to file a new case when the right driver is available.
Wairimu's story highlights the difficulties faced by victims of assault in Kenya, particularly women who are often left to fend for themselves. Her determination to seek justice serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
