Published on August 13, 2019, a violent clash between farmers and herders in Mugoya area, Mariakani, Kilifi County, left two people dead and a third seriously injured.
According to Mariakani police boss, Kennedy Osando, the fight began when farmers confronted a group of herders at a maize plantation. The herders had driven their livestock into the farm, sparking the confrontation.
Osando explained that a security meeting was held after the clashes, which resolved that all the animals be flushed out of the farm to prevent further killings. Hundreds of animals were detained at Mariakani Police Station before being released to their owners, who were ordered to move them out of the area.
Police have since launched patrols in the area to keep the herders out. This incident occurred just days after two other people were seriously injured in a similar clash between herders and farmers in Lunga lunga, Kwale County.
Elsewhere, a boda boda operator, Stephen Kahindi, 27, was found brutally killed in Mwanguto area, Kaloleni. Kahindi had ferried two men who posed as customers from Mazeras to Kaloleni before meeting his death. His motorcycle was later recovered in Likoni, Mombasa County.
