Published on August 13, 2019, MCAs in Taita Taveta County have threatened to impeach Governor Granton Samboja due to a prolonged dispute over the county's 2019-20 budget.

Ward representatives have expressed frustration with Governor Samboja's refusal to approve the budget after the MCAs reduced the executive's allocations and redirected Sh833 million to the ward development fund.

County Assembly Majority Leader Jason Tuja stated that the assembly has exhausted all avenues to reconcile with the governor and will now proceed with an impeachment motion.

“The governor has become a stumbling block in our efforts to resolve the budget impasse, something that the assembly cannot stomach any more,” said Tuja.

“We have exhausted all avenues available. Our next move is to impeach him.”

Samboja has responded by asserting that his administration will seek a dissolution of the assembly, citing a petition with 52,100 signatures to President Uhuru Kenyatta.
