Lamu Police Officer Arrested for Releasing Suspected Drug Trafficker

On August 11, 2019, police in Lamu County arrested a suspected drug trafficker at Mtangawanda Jetty in Pate Island.

However, the suspect was later released after negotiations with police officers led by Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Shadrack Mumo.

Confirming the arrest, Lamu Police Commander Muchagi Kioi stated that the suspect was arrested with a drug substance, a mobile phone, and a knife.

Initial investigations revealed that OCS Mumo received a bribe of Sh50,000 to release the suspect.

Following the incident, Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia vowed to take stern action against police officials found to have colluded with drug dealers.
