On August 12, 2019, the Kenyan government announced plans to establish Youth Empowerment Centers across all sub-counties to harness the potential of the country's youth.
Information, Communication, and Technology Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru made the announcement during the International Youth Day Celebrations in Kwale County, where he represented President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Mucheru emphasized the government's commitment to empowering young people, stating that the centers would provide opportunities for them to develop their skills and contribute to the country's development.
He urged young people to take advantage of the various initiatives already put in place by the government to improve their economic prospects.
The government also highlighted the importance of the competence-based curriculum, which it believes will equip learners with the skills needed to drive the country forward and reduce unemployment.
During the celebrations, speakers also raised concerns about the high rate of teenage pregnancies in the host county, urging parents to take responsibility for their children's well-being and protect them from sex predators and drug traffickers.
