The African Games are just around the corner, but the Kenyan athletics team is facing a crisis of sorts. The team has been in residential training at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, but the conditions at the camp have been a major concern.
According to sources, the team hotel is full, and there is limited space for the athletes. One athlete revealed that they are considering paying for their own accommodation because the situation is dire.
Another athlete echoed the same concerns, stating that they have not received their allowances yet. The team is set to be axed before their departure on August 23, and the final squad is expected to be drafted on Tuesday.
Athletics Kenya officials, led by Vice President Paul Mutwii, were seen consulting with the Games Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Charles Nyaberi on Sunday. Mutwii stated that they are trying to settle the stand-off, but it's not easy dealing with large squads.
However, Nyaberi revealed that the teams have been fully sponsored by the Ministry of Sports through the National Sports Fund, and they have no problems with the government's support.
On Sunday, the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) issued kits to various teams, but the athletics team was yet to receive their kits due to their large squad.
Teams are set to begin their departure tomorrow morning, with the national volleyball team among the first to depart.
