On August 12, 2019, Kenyan shooter Sammy Onyango made history by winning gold in the Expert category at the Northern Nationals shooting tournament held in South Africa.
Onyango, a seasoned shooting expert and Vice Chair of the National Gun Owners Association (NGAO), defeated 17 Master shooters to claim the top prize.
His impressive performance earned him promotion from Expert to Master in the SSP category, a testament to his exceptional shooting skills.
Onyango's achievement is a significant milestone for the Kenyan shooting team, which has been growing in confidence since the start of the year.
Under the guidance of the National Gun Owners Association of Kenya, the team has been participating in various events aimed at sharpening their skills, including the Chairman's Cup held at the Kirigiti Shooting Range on June 27.
Onyango, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Triple Tap Range, has been instrumental in the development of the sport in Kenya, conducting clinics to help improve the skills of local shooters.
With his recent win, Onyango will now compete with South African IDPA champion Ian Van der Bank, who won the overall prize at the Northern Nationals tournament.
Van der Bank, who visited Kenya two months ago to tutor members of the gun owners association, was impressed by Onyango's skills and has expressed his willingness to compete against him on an equal level.
Onyango's achievement is a significant boost to the Kenyan shooting team, which is currently preparing for the World Championship in Alabama, USA, set to take place in October this year.
